Touchdown in Africa

(Written on Monday, July 5)

We landed in Entebbe today along with each one of our bags (yay!). The smell is the first thing that hits you when you get off the plane – a rich, earthy, slightly burnt smell that instantly brought back memories of Cameroon for Dave. At 7am it was already warm and sunny, although Jeff and Shannon found it a bit chilly – Shan was in a sweater!

Uganda is a very beautiful part of Africa, very lush and green even in the dry season. Of course with it being dry season, there is also the ever-present red dust that coats everything alongside any unpaved road.

The first stop was in Kampala at the Dyck's favourite grocery store. Intererstingly, it's not their favourite because of the groceries; it's because there is a Starbucks-quality place next door.

We stopped by Mpigi on the way to Kibaale and met up with the Dickies, Bifferts and Whites. We also met a few of the kids when they came up the hill for lunch, but unfortunately we didn't get to stay too long to visit. Next we were off to the equator for a requisite photo of the landmark there and some burgers.

The Kibaale Commnuity Centre is great. We are in a guest house that is very comfortable and well-stocked. Jeff and Shannon are taking very good care of us! The kids are playing constantly in the backyard and climbing trees. So far they caught a chicken (Joel was the hero) and learned that you're supposed to throw rocks at dogs to keep them away.

The internet here is spotty at best, and we've learned that due to the time difference Telus webmail always thinks our session has expired. Probably best to send any emails to Dave's gmail account (link at right) which is working fine.
